Petra · From Wadi Rum

Petra from Wadi Rum

Wadi Rum and Petra are the two experiences every traveller to southern Jordan wants, and they pair beautifully — a night in a desert camp under the stars, then the rose-red city the next day. The transfer between them is short and straightforward, and the contrast between the open desert and the carved city is one of the great travel sequences. Here is how to time it.

The route

Desert to city in a morning

Wadi Rum village to Petra (Wadi Musa) is roughly 120 km and about two hours by road, heading north-east out of the desert and up into the highlands. The drive is scenic and easy. Most travellers do the transfer in the morning: watch the sunrise in the desert, have breakfast at the camp, drive out, and arrive in Wadi Musa by late morning with the afternoon to begin Petra or to settle in for a full day tomorrow.

Timing it well

Two ways to sequence it

Desert first, then Petra

The most popular sequence. You arrive in Wadi Rum in the afternoon, do a jeep safari and sunset, overnight in a Bedouin camp, watch the desert sunrise, and transfer to Petra the next morning. You reach Wadi Musa around midday — perfect for checking in, eating, and starting a two-day Petra visit the following morning at opening. This is the order we recommend for most travellers.

Petra first, then the desert

The reverse works too, and some prefer it: do the walking-heavy Petra days first while you are fresh, then finish the trip with the effortless pleasure of being driven through the desert and looked after in a camp. The transfer from Wadi Musa to Wadi Rum is the same two hours, usually done in the early afternoon to reach the desert for a sunset safari.

Logistics

Making the transfer easy

Most Wadi Rum desert camps and jeep operators arrange transfers to Wadi Musa directly — you come out of the desert to the village and a car takes you on to Petra. This is the simplest way to do it and we build it into our tours routinely. If you have a private driver for your wider Jordan trip, they will simply collect you from Wadi Rum village at the agreed time. There is no need to navigate public transport for this leg.

One thing to plan for: after a night in a desert camp you will want to freshen up before Petra. If you are going straight into the site, book a hotel in Wadi Musa for that night so you can shower and rest; if you are starting Petra the next morning, an afternoon arrival gives you time to settle in, eat, and rest before an early start.

The southern Jordan loop

Add Aqaba for the full circuit

The classic southern Jordan trip is a three-stop loop: Aqaba (Red Sea) → Wadi Rum (desert) → Petra (the city), or any rotation of the three. With roughly two hours between each, you can do all three comfortably in four to five days. It is the most efficient way to see the south of Jordan, and for cruise passengers with an overnight in Aqaba it is achievable in a tight window. Our multi-day tours cover exactly this loop.
