Distances Between Destinations
Jordan looks small on a map, but the driving is slower than the kilometres suggest — mountain roads, desert stretches and the occasional camel add up. Here are realistic times, not the optimistic ones from a mapping app.

- ~3.5 hours / 250 km
- Amman → Petra (King’s Hwy)
- ~5–6 hours with stops / 260 km
- Amman → Jerash
- ~1 hour / 50 km
- Amman → Dead Sea
- ~1 hour / 60 km
- Amman → Madaba
- ~45 min / 35 km
- Petra → Wadi Rum
- ~2 hours / 120 km
- Wadi Rum → Aqaba
- ~1 hour / 70 km

Reading the times
Why mapping apps are optimistic
The times above build in real-world conditions: mountain bends on the King’s Highway, a rest stop, and the slow last kilometres into Wadi Musa. A mapping app will often show 30–60 minutes less. Treat the app as the floor and these as the honest figure.
The King’s Highway is the slow, beautiful route through Madaba, Mount Nebo, Karak and Dana. The Desert Highway is the fast, straight route to the east. Most travelers drive one down and the other back — see driving in Jordan for the comparison.
Planning rule of thumb
One big move per day
A good rule: one major drive per day, with sightseeing at either end. Amman to Petra via the King’s Highway with stops at Madaba and Karak is a full, satisfying day — not a morning’s drive. Trying to do Amman → Petra → Wadi Rum in a single day is possible but exhausting and leaves you seeing everything through a windscreen.
