Jordan for First-Time Visitors

If it is your first time in Jordan, a handful of decisions determine whether the trip is magical or exhausting. Here is the local shortlist of what to prioritise, what to skip, and what to know before you go.

Prioritise

The four you cannot miss

For a first trip, four places form the heart of Jordan: Petra (allow two days), Wadi Rum (an overnight in the desert), the Dead Sea (a float and a sunset), and Amman and Jerash (the capital and the finest Roman city in the region). Everything else — Dana, Madaba, Mount Nebo, Aqaba, the desert castles — is a wonderful addition if you have time.

Seven days does these four comfortably. Five does them tightly. Three means choosing. See how many days for the full breakdown.

Common mistakes

What first-timers get wrong

One day in Petra. It is the most common regret — the site is huge and one rushed day sells it short. Rushing in summer. Midday heat in July is miserable; if you must go then, start at dawn and rest midday. Skipping Wadi Rum overnight. A day trip to the desert misses the point — the night is the experience. Overpacking the days. Jordan rewards slowing down; see our places worth slowing down for.

Etiquette basics

A little goes a long way

Dress modestly (cover shoulders and knees), accept tea when it is offered, learn “shukran” (thank you) and “ahlan” (hello), and you will be welcomed everywhere. Jordan is safe, friendly and used to visitors — but a little cultural awareness transforms the warmth you receive. See our customs & etiquette page for the detail.
