Jordan for Older Travelers

Jordan is entirely doable and deeply rewarding for older travelers — the welcome is warm, the sights are extraordinary, and the logistics can be made comfortable. The secret is pacing, the right season, and using the access options at Petra.

Pace

Slow is the right speed

The single best decision older travelers can make is to slow down. One main sight per day, with a long midday rest, beats a packed schedule. Seven unhurried days will see Amman, Jerash, Petra, Wadi Rum and the Dead Sea comfortably; ten days lets you add Madaba, Mount Nebo and Dana without strain.

Choose spring or autumn for cool, walkable weather, and stay in comfortable hotels close to the sites — in Wadi Musa for Petra, at a Dead Sea resort, and in a fixed-tent Bedouin camp in Wadi Rum rather than a sleeping-bag setup.

Petra access

You do not have to walk it all

Petra is more accessible than people assume. A horse-drawn carriage covers the Siq to the Treasury; a golf cart can take you along the main trail to the Royal Tombs and the Basin; and donkeys carry visitors up the climbs to the Monastery and the High Place. With these, the core of Petra — the Siq, the Treasury, the Royal Tombs — is achievable for most older travelers.

The climbs on foot are not advisable; use the animals or simply enjoy the lower city. Consider two short days rather than one long one, and start early while it is cool. See Petra practical information for details.

A comfortable route

What we recommend

Amman (2 nights, with Jerash as a day trip) → Madaba and Mount Nebo → Petra (2 nights, two short days) → Wadi Rum (1 night, fixed camp, gentle 4x4) → Dead Sea (2 nights, rest). This is the comfortable classic — all the highlights, no rushing, and a real rest at the end. We can shape it around your exact pace.
