Jordan for Cruise Passengers

Most cruise passengers see Jordan through the port of Aqaba, with a single day to spend. That is enough for Petra, or for Wadi Rum, or for a Red Sea day — but not all three. Here is how to make a shore day count.

The port

Aqaba is your gateway

Cruise ships call at Aqaba, Jordan’s Red Sea port. From there, Petra (Wadi Musa) is about a two-hour drive each way, Wadi Rum is roughly 70 minutes, and Aqaba’s own beaches and reef are minutes away. With one day, pick one of these — trying for two means seeing neither properly.

For most first-time visitors, that one choice is Petra. It is the reason Jordan is on the map, and a well-run day from Aqaba is entirely feasible.

Your options

~2 hrs each way + 5–6 hrs on site
Wadi Rum half day

Aqaba & Red Sea
Beach, snorkel, town — no long drive
Petra + Wadi Rum
Only if 2 days in port — not in one
Best for first-timers

Ship time
Plan to be back 90 min before sailing

A Petra shore day

How to do it well

Disembark early, meet a pre-arranged driver at the port, and drive straight to Wadi Musa — about two hours. Enter Petra as soon as you arrive, walk the Siq to the Treasury, continue to the Royal Tombs and the colonnaded street, and if time and energy allow, head toward the Monastery. Build in a clear departure time that gets you back to the ship with a 90-minute buffer.

A private driver-guide is the smart choice for cruise passengers — you control the timing, you go straight to the gate, and you do not wait for a bus of forty. See our Petra in one day plan and the Petra practical information page.

If you have two days

Add Wadi Rum or the Dead Sea

Some itineraries overnight in Aqaba. With two days, do Petra on day one and Wadi Rum on day two — a 4x4 into the desert with a Bedouin lunch is the perfect contrast to a walking day. The Dead Sea is too far from Aqaba for a comfortable day trip; save it for a land visit.
