How Many Days to Spend in Jordan
Jordan is bigger than it looks on a map, and the driving is slower than the distances suggest. The number of days you have determines not just how much you see, but how much you actually enjoy. Here is an honest breakdown.
The honest minimum
Three days: Petra and one more thing
Three days is the bare minimum, and only if you accept you will miss a lot. Day one: Amman and Jerash. Day two: Petra (a full day, arrive early). Day three: Wadi Rum or the Dead Sea — not both. You will spend a lot of the trip in a car.
This works for travelers connecting Jordan to a wider Middle East trip, or cruise passengers with limited time. It does not do justice to Petra, which deserves two days on its own.
The balanced trip
Five to seven days: the sweet spot
Five days lets you see Amman, Jerash, Petra (two days), Wadi Rum (with an overnight), and the Dead Sea — tight but doable if you don’t mind moving every day. Seven days is the trip we recommend to most first-time visitors: it adds a little breathing room, a Dana or Madaba/Mount Nebo stop, and a second night in the desert or at the Dead Sea.
Seven days is enough to feel Jordan rather than just photograph it. You can sit with a tea, take the slow route down the King’s Highway, and spend a proper second day in Petra without rushing.
The full picture
Ten days and beyond
Ten days lets you see Jordan properly: the north (Jerash, Ajloun, Umm Qais), Amman, the King’s Highway with Madaba, Mount Nebo and Karak, Dana, Petra (two to three days), Wadi Rum (two nights), Aqaba and the Dead Sea. You can hike, slow down, and still have rest days.
Beyond ten days you can add the Egeria Way pilgrimage trail, deeper Dana hiking, Little Petra overnight, and the eastern desert castles — the parts most visitors never reach. See our detailed itineraries for day-by-day versions of each length.

- Petra alone
- Allow 2 days minimum, 3 to do it justice
- Wadi Rum

The real question
Pace matters more than days
Two travelers with seven days can have completely different trips. One packs in eight sites and remembers mainly the car; the other picks five and remembers the sunset over Wadi Rum. Jordan rewards slowing down — see our article on places worth slowing down for.
